For two weeks, I was standing in Palestine, learning, laughing, and resisting with the most amazing group of folks I’ve ever spent time with. I have spent the last few hours thinking about the notion of Sumud, or steadfastness.

Sumud is partly about physically remaining present on the land, something that is of critical importance. But Sumud is also about various forms of resistance to the Occupation. Resistance is not only about big gestures, but also everyday acts like planting olive trees and naming children.

I am always struck that, like Africans in America, Palestinians manage to resist absurd levels of structural and direct violence without losing faith and joy.

Palestine reminded us that there is joy in resistance. Struggle is beautiful. From Ferguson to Palestine, we must create the world that is not yet.

Freedom is close. And I believe, more than ever, that WE WILL WIN.
